How to Use ChatGPT to Create Your Homeschool Curriculum
AI tools, like ChatGPT, can be insanely powerful if you know how to leverage them. The key to using them effectively is understanding how to "teach" them who they are and then formulate your prompt so that the output generated is actually useful. I have used multiple free and paid AI tools for all kinds of things business and personal, but one of my favorite ways to use AI, more specifically ChatGPT, is to help develop and supplement our homeschool curriculum.
If it is your first time using ChatGPT, here are some key points to keep in mind:
The information provided is not real-time. For example, ChatGPT lets you know that it doesn't have access to real-time information and that it can only access information up to its most recent update, which as it stands today is Jan 2022. Paid versions may have more current information.
Understand how to communicate with ChatGPT. As the name suggests, ChatGPT is designed to operate in a chat format. It can provide information, answer questions and even engage in conversation. It develops a persona over time as you build your threads.
Be clear and specific. The more detailed the prompt, the more likely you are to get a quality response. Tell ChatGPT who it is, the tone it should use, the audience it is talking to, the question it needs to answer or the information that it should provide, any supporting information or useful anecdotes that it should include, etc.
Always verify and fact-check information! The information provided by ChatGPT comes from all across the internet, meaning the reliability of the information provided in the responses, especially if you are using ChatGPT for research, may be limited or even incorrect. Always double-check your statistics, facts, and data points before using the information provided.
Don't get discouraged. Depending on how you phrase your prompts, the responses from ChatGPT may vary in quality and usefulness. If you are not getting quality responses, try to rephrase your prompt. You will learn over time the best structure for your prompts.
To get the most out of ChatGPT, you first need to understand the most effective way to "teach" it and the value of threads. I have multiple continuous threads that I work within depending on the application. I have multiple threads that I have been working on over the last year, and I have one specifically for homeschooling. To begin laying the foundational details, I gave as much information as possible about who I am and what I am going to be asking about.
For example, I started my thread by telling ChatGPT that I am homeschooling 4 kids, ages XYZ, in grades XYZ, in Texas. I also explained the current programs and curriculums that we are currently using and each child's interests and preferred learning styles. From there I was able to ask ChatGPT to generate different supplemental activities, for my older kids. For my youngest, I was able to ask ChatGPT to generate a 19-week full curriculum for Pre-K4 including all of the fundamentals that would normally be required to be successful in Kinder. I asked it to format the curriculum with weekly lesson plans and daily to-do lists and the output was amazing! I was able to take the suggested curriculum and structure it in our homeschool planner in such a way that we could easily follow it.
With the fundamental knowledge provided, I have been able to work within this same thread and "chat" with ChatGPT about what is working or not working, request alternatives to assignments or activities, and I have also worked within the same thread for suggestions of daily activities, grade-level appropriate morning journal prompts, field trips and more.
In my opinion, this tool gets more useful the more you use it because it learns what you need based on the questions you ask, the information you request, and how often you regenerate responses. If you feel stuck in your homeschooling journey or are ready to shake up your kids' creativity, give ChatGPT a try!
